Animal Assisted Activity

Activities That Promote Well-Being

Animal-Assisted Activity (AAA) is an animal-assisted intervention that provides motivational, educational, recreational and/or therapeutic benefits, thereby contributing to improved quality of life.

AAA is delivered by specially trained professionals and/or volunteers together with dogs that meet specific suitability criteria.

In AAA, goals are not individually defined for each participant, and monitoring and documenting progress are not required. The content of a visit may be spontaneous and adapted to the circumstances and the participants’ needs at the time. An activity may also consist of a single visit.

AAA can be delivered individually or in a group.

The Dog Is an Active and Important Part of the Activity

An activity involves a therapy team consisting of a suitably trained handler and dog, together with one or more participants.

The handler is responsible for ensuring that the activity is carried out safely and to a high standard, recognising the responses of both the dog and the participants, and adapting the content of the visit to their needs and well-being at the time.

Through its presence, behaviour and participation in various tasks, the dog creates opportunities for positive interaction, communication, relaxation, motivation and different forms of learning. Activities can be adapted to the participants’ age, abilities and interests.

Where Are AAA Delivered?

Animal-Assisted Activities are delivered in a variety of institutions and settings, where the presence of a dog can make a meaningful contribution to participants’ well-being and quality of life.

Depending on the purpose of the visit and the needs of the participants, AAA can take place in schools, kindergartens, care homes for older people, hospitals, residential and other care institutions, and other suitable settings. The conditions of the institution, the safety of the participants and the well-being of the dog are always taken into account.

The PET Institute delivers AAA in institutions with which it has a cooperation agreement, as well as through one-off introductory or promotional visits.

How Long Does an Activity Last?

An individual visit or activity lasts between 15 and 60 minutes. The duration is adapted to the purpose of the visit, the number and needs of the participants, and above all, the dog’s ability to participate.

Mandatory breaks are built into each activity, giving the dog an opportunity to rest, withdraw and relax. The length and frequency of breaks depend on the dog’s well-being, the demands of the activity and the circumstances.

When delivering AAA, the dog’s well-being is always an important part of planning and implementation.

Every donation makes a difference and helps us do our work even better.
