When a Dog Encourages Listening, Conversation and Learning
The programme is designed to encourage a positive attitude towards books and a desire to read, while also helping children develop language, cognitive and social skills in a pleasant and relaxed environment.
The programme aims to expand children’s vocabulary and improve their understanding of spoken and written language, develop sustained attention and concentration, and strengthen their listening and focused attention skills.
It also encourages positive social interaction with other children and the dog, a willingness to participate in group activities, and greater self-esteem and confidence.
The Poslušam za PET (Listening for PET) programme can be delivered as Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) or as an Animal-Assisted Activity (AAA).

Poslušam za PET – AAT
Poslušam za PET – AAT is a planned Animal-Assisted Therapy programme delivered by a professional team consisting of a professional, a therapy team and a pre-selected group of children. The professional selects the children who will participate, defines the goals, chooses appropriate books, plans the individual sessions, and monitors and documents the children’s progress.
The therapy team’s handler reads the book and is responsible for the dog’s physical and emotional well-being. The handler works closely with the professional and, together with them, adapts the activities to the children’s needs and goals.
The school or institution must provide a suitable, quiet and safe space for the programme.
The programme can be delivered in schools and other institutions where appropriate conditions are available.

Poslušam za PET – AAA
Poslušam za PET – AAA is an Animal-Assisted Activity involving a therapy team and a group of participants. The handler selects a suitable book, reads it to the children and leads a discussion about the story. The dog is an active part of the activity, creating a pleasant, relaxed and supportive environment for listening and participation through its presence.
In this format, goals are not individually defined and progress is not formally monitored or documented. The main purpose of the activity is to encourage interest in books and stories, develop listening, conversation and participation skills, and create a positive experience around books and the dog.
The activity can take place in a variety of settings, including schools, educational institutions, hospitals, libraries and other suitable environments.
